The Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla has initiated disciplinary actions against 100 students for various infractions, including poor attendance and unauthorized access to restricted areas. This decision follows a tragic incident at the Hirakud reservoir's Fishery Point, where a student lost her life earlier this month.
The university's Disciplinary Committee convened on April 25 and subsequently released an order detailing the names of the students involved and the corresponding penalties. The majority of the students are in their third year, with others spanning first to fourth years and including one MSc student.
Key Disciplinary Actions:
- Grade Reductions: Affected students will face a one-grade reduction in theory papers for the ongoing semester.
- Fines: Monetary penalties ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 have been imposed.
- Social Work Assignments: Some students are mandated to participate in social work under the supervision of the vice president of sports or hostel wardens.
- Hostel Expulsions: Six fourth-year female students, who violated a prohibition order by visiting the Fishery Point, resulting in a fellow student's death, have been expelled from their hostels and fined ₹5,000 each.
- Activity Restrictions: Approximately 24 students are barred from holding any elected, nominated, or selected positions, participating in activities, or serving as captains of sports teams. They are also ineligible for medals, certificates, and prizes related to academic and extracurricular achievements.
Furthermore, all but 15 students are required to submit an affidavit, co-signed by their parents, to the Dean of Students' Welfare. This affidavit affirms their commitment to abstain from any form of indiscipline for the remainder of their tenure at VSSUT, with the understanding that any future violations could lead to more severe consequences or expulsion.
These measures underscore VSSUT's commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring the safety and well-being of its student community.
